All kids need opportunities to build the skills they will need to navigate life’s challenges. These skills–critical thinking, creative innovation, serving others, etc.–will help kids gain the self-efficacy needed to flourish.
For some of the kids we reach, their schools, programs, and/or parents will be able to cover the cost for Taste Quest materials and ingredients. However, most of the kids we serve live in under-resourced communities. Many of them experience food insecurity. For these kids, gaining agency, and especially food agency, is a matter of urgency.
We hear from many of our partners that even if these families receive fresh ingredients, they may or may not know how to use them. In some cases, the free food is wasted or returned because of a lack of familiarity with those foods.
Introducing Taste Quest’s spy-themed deep-dive into seasonal fruits and vegetables! When kids engage with Mission ImPastable, they become secret agents and need to gather intel on featured ingredients to decrypt a secret recipe. Each vegetable has its own decryption puzzle and recipe packed in a “dossier” file that kids can collect from community gardens, CSA boxes, and farmers market partners, or via subscription from Taste Quest.
